Theresa Black

In 1987, Theresa joined Esperanza as a Direct Support Professional in what was then the Day Treatment Program. Her outstanding leadership and dedication quickly led to roles as Client Coordinator and then House Manager in the Residential Department. In 1990, when Esperanza opened a Community Residence on Broadway and 157th Street, Theresa became Residential Director — a role she continues to lead with excellence. She has helped grow this department into a model of quality housing, playing one of the most pivotal roles in the agency’s development and stability.

Inez Barnwell-McCoy

Inez Barnwell-McCoy

Inez joined Esperanza in 2002 as Director of Day Habilitation, bringing over a decade of experience from YAI and Lifespire. Her work as a Medical Counselor, Treatment Coordinator, and Recreational Counselor gave her the foundation to lead with wisdom, care, and innovation. Her guidance has helped the program grow significantly, and her professionalism continues to uplift the staff and participants alike.

Elizabeth Lindao

Elizabeth joined Esperanza as an 18-year-old, and over 30 years later, she remains one of the organization’s most devoted team members. Known for her joyful energy, empathy, and dedication, Elizabeth co-directs the Day Habilitation Program and also manages the Wednesday and Saturday recreation programs. She is a cornerstone of the agency’s daily operations and brings exceptional value to our community.

Elizabeth Chavez

Elizabeth began her Esperanza journey in 2013 as Payroll Officer and stepped into the Chief Operating Officer role in 2021. Her expertise spans HR, benefits, finance, and agency operations. She has led major initiatives including fundraising event development and expansion projects. Known for her calm presence, compassion, and positive energy, Elizabeth is a steady force who helps keep our mission running strong.

Jenniffer Fernandez

Jenniffer began with Esperanza in 2011 as a Direct Support Professional and quickly rose through the ranks due to her care, work ethic, and leadership. From roles in quality assurance and after-school supervision to Assistant Director and now Director of Community Services, she leads all community-based programs with integrity and compassion. Jenniffer is deeply trusted by families, staff, and participants alike.

Felix Sandoval

Felix Sandoval

Felix joined Esperanza in 2011 as a Direct Support Professional for Community Habilitation, and later contributed to several departments including Get-Away and After-School. His path led to the Investigation Department and now to his current role, where he oversees quality improvement and regulatory compliance. Felix is known for his attention to detail, great communication, and for always centering the voices of the people we serve.

Yudelca Perez Romero

Yudelca joined Esperanza as a Program Coordinator, bringing a strong professional background and over a decade of experience in team leadership, operations, and people-centered support. She is drawn to the IDD field because of her love for working with people and her belief in the power of empathy. Walking alongside individuals with developmental disabilities has deepened her humanity and strengthened her commitment to improving lives with dignity, care, and purpose.

Luisa Vargas

Luisa Vargas

Luisa joined Esperanza in early 2024 as an Investigator and was quickly promoted to Assistant Director of Community Services. Her strong communication skills and compassionate nature led to her appointment as Director of Transportation and Maintenance in 2025. This new department was created to meet the evolving needs of a growing agency and to ensure the highest quality experience for the people we support.

Yesenia Estrella-Vega

Yesenia entered the field in 2007 as a Medicaid Service Coordinator and quickly became an advocate in education and housing for people with developmental disabilities. She went on to lead several family support programs and served as Deputy Executive Director at a sister organization. She joined Esperanza in 2017, became Associate Director, and was mentored by founder James Malley before becoming Executive Director in 2021. Under her leadership, Esperanza has experienced transformative growth and a renewed culture of collaboration, inclusion, and joy.

James Malley

James joined Esperanza in 1971 when the organization primarily served the immigrant community of Washington Heights through language and vocational programs. Upon recognizing the deep isolation faced by people with developmental disabilities, James began what became a lifelong advocacy journey — launching Esperanza’s first adult day program in 1973. Over the next five decades, he grew the organization to include residential, recreation, and in-home services. After serving as Executive Director for over 50 years, James continues to guide the mission as a trusted advisor.
